Time.

Time is a thief.  This is the metaphor I came up with for our class literary term drawings.  I did not even begin to think about how true that is.  The only difference is that you can stop a thief, you cannot stop time.  It just keeps going on and on, with or without you.  I really had never realized how fast it moves either.  Nowadays time just flies by and leaves everyone is the dust. Everyday is just another day closer to the end, inevitably.

As a child, time is not even thought about and everyday is just as long as the day before.  You just live in the moment as a kid and do something crazy or eventful everyday and never get tired.  Growing up you begin to miss the days.  I hear people who always say that they 'love' sleeping and being in bed.  That is just a big waste of time because you could be doing something important or just those few more minutes you spend in bed in the morning you could spend with someone or a pet or eating a little earlier.  Regardless of how tired you are, getting out of bed to finish the days tasks ahead of schedule gets you more free time.  Think about that.

Imagine a genie gives you three wishes.  Money and fame are probably the biggest two someone would wish for.  What if you lengthened the days? Not even by a lot but just a couple of hours longer could make the world of a difference because you could do even more stuff.  It would people more time to do what they want.  More time to make music, more time to paint, more time for the military.  The list is endless because that is what people need more then money or any other tangible object like it.  Time has no regrets.

  1. That's deep stuff right there Andrew. I remember as a child I wouldn't care how fast or slow the days went by. But now I find myself looking back and thinking "all that time passed already?". I deeply agree that what everyone needs, and most often wants, more than material objects is more time.

  2. Very interesting. OK first things first...as an English teacher I should point out that, while "time is a thief" is technically a metaphor (compares two dissimilar things using a form of the verb "to be"), it is more relevant as a form of personification. This makes sense because time is actually a man-made construct, and according to Einstein's law of relativity, it is intimately linked with space. He even coined the phrase "Spacetime". Einstein would argue with you about being able to stop time; if time and space are one and the same, it would be possible to stop time by simply stopping movement. What would happen if the world suddenly stopped revolving around the sun, and stayed in place? Aside from one side of the world toasting like a charred marshmallow and the other side of the world becoming more frozen than an exposed appendage on the summit of Mount Everest, time would stop. We would not be able to advance from one day to the next. It would remain September 19 forever, wouldn't it?

  3. I agree with most of the things you are saying. Just yesterday I was talking about how I wish the days were longer, just by a few hours. I spend most of my life in fast motion from one thing to the next. With never any free time, or time to relax so it would be nice for a few more hours. One thing I disagree with though it about sleeping. I always wish I had just a few more minutes to sleep, because being tired throughout the day is something I wish I could eliminate from my life completely. But your right, you can't stop time, and its crazy how fast it moves.
